How to Improve Your Credit

Many Americans aren't good with their money and they're even worse with other people's money. Here are a few things you should know about using credit wisely and improving your credit score.

How to be a Better Boss

How is it that some managers are able to inspire top performances from their employees while others can barely extract an honest day’s work from the people who report to them? The secret is out.

According to a new survey by leading staffing company Kelly Services, an overwhelming majority of American employees want to work hard because their bosses are nice to them. As part of the Kelly Global Workforce Index, 4,000 Americans were asked to rate their bosses on four attributes -- communication, leadership, team spirit and delegation skills. American workers ranked their bosses above average in all four areas.

On a scale of 1-to-10 with 10 being best, bosses in this country received a 7.3 for delegating authority, which shows they trust their employees; and a 7.1 for creating a sense of team spirit, which shows they want morale to be good. For leadership ability, they received a 7.0; a 6.9 for communication skills.

“American managers are putting extra emphasis on motivating and engaging their employees because they know that a content and motivated workforce will reduce costly turnover and will contribute to the bottom line, says George Corona, senior vice president of Kelly Services. So what are some of the most effective ways American bosses are raising people's stature from mere hired hands or order takers to valued team members?

* By asking employees to complete the initial screening of potential job candidates -- to make sure the person hired will be a good fit with the team;

* By consistently seeking input from employees, and acting on their suggestions for improving productivity and efficiency;

* By resisting the urge to micromanage -- leaving it up to the employees to determine the best way to complete their assignments.

And here are some innovative ways they are encouraging employees to get out and have fun together:

* Sending employees to team-building workshops where they are dependent on each other to complete a goal, like to climb a mountain, sail a ship, run an obstacle course, etc.

* Encouraging monthly get-togethers where employees can put work aside for an hour or two and are given the opportunity to socialize.

Overall, American bosses come in second only to Mexico when it comes to being the best supervisors in world. The industries where bosses get the highest accolades are business services, the sciences, pharmaceutical and IT.

How to Comfort a Cranky Baby

If your baby wakes up in the middle of the night crying uncontrollably, what is the first thing you would do? Most parents say they would rush over to the crib, pick the baby up and try to offer comfort.

If hugging, talking and singing a song doesn’t work, check to see if the baby needs a diaper change or is hungry; but what do you do if none of these tricks calm your baby? According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, extreme fussiness that doesn’t let up, even when the child is being comforted, could be a sign of illness, so you should take the baby’s temperature. But as any parent who has had to deal with a fussy baby will tell you, that can be easier said than done.

While you often can tell if your child is warmer than usual by feeling the forehead, only a thermometer can tell if he or she has a fever and how high the temperature is. Ordinarily, a rectal reading of 97.9 to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit, an oral reading of 95.9 to 99.5 degrees Fahrenheit and an ear reading of 96.4 to 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit is considered normal, while higher readings indicate fever; but good luck getting an accurate reading from a baby who is flailing about and screaming. The thermometer must be in place for a minute or longer.

Well, now there’s some good news for parents struggling with this dilemma. The Kidz-Med Thermofocus, the world’s first non-contact clinical thermometer, is now available in the United States. Introducing the innovative NeverWake Technology, there is no need to touch, startle, upset or wake your child with this thermometer.

All you have to do to obtain an accurate reading of your child’s temperature is hold the thermometer perpendicular to the forehead, and using infrared technology, within in a few hundredths of a second, the Thermofocus will carry out a sequence of up to 125 calculations. It will then deliver an accurate reading of the child’s temperature on a digital display. In a nutshell, a simple point, press and release produces an instant reading.

Fevers under 101 degrees Fahrenheit generally don’t need to be treated unless the child is uncomfortable. To ease the pain your baby may be experiencing, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends you give them acetaminophen or ibuprofen. Dosage depends on the child’s age and weight. Check with your doctor for his or her recommendation.

According to Dr. Richard G. Lagueruela, director of surgical services at Miami Children’s Hospital, “It’s extremely accurate and children of all ages aren’t even aware their temperature is being taken, so there’s no need to restrain an infant or child. Obtaining an accurate temperature is trauma free: no earpiece, mouth probe, or rectal entry required. It’s safe, accurate, and painless. The Thermofocus will revolutionize the health industry and make a difficult part of parenting a delight!”

Among the benefits of Thermofocus that Dr. Lagueruela and his colleagues like best:

* You don’t have to wake, or startle, a child when they are sick to take their temperature.

* The infrared technology is completely safe.

* Parents can rest assured they are getting an accurate reading.

* The method is totally hygienic

ot only does the Thermofocus take the temperature of the body, but it can also be used to take the readings of baby’s food, bottle, bath water and even room temperature. All you have to do is point the thermometer in the direction of the item being tested and you’ll get an accurate reading back almost immediately.

How to Get Your Driveway in Tip Top Shape for the Winter

Winter is quickly approaching and that means time is running out for those all-important DIY projects that you need to complete before the first frost.

Because of the fluctuating temperatures approaching nationwide, both asphalt and concrete driveways will soon be subject to cracking and splits. When water seeps into cracks and crevasses and then freezes, the water expands causing existing cracks and holes to get larger. If you don’t want to spend next spring repairing the damage or worse, resurfacing the entire driveway, take the time now to up your home’s curb appeal and get it ready for winter.

“Fixing concrete and asphalt areas before winter arrives is key,” says Mark Goldstrom, concrete and asphalt repair expert from Sakrete, a company that has been a leader and innovator in concrete and asphalt repair products since 1936. “The holes and cracks must be filled and sealed before any water is allowed to freeze inside.”

Concrete and asphalt repair is easy and can be completed in less than a day. Here’s how to repair large cracks and worn areas in concrete driveways:

1. First, you need to remove all deteriorated and foreign material from the area to be repaired. Then, slightly undercut the side of the repair area with a hammer and chisel. Keeping the side of the repair area vertical or slightly undercut provides a better base for the repair material.

2. Next, saturate the area with clean water. Just before the new repair material is applied, sweep away any standing water. Apply a slurry coat of Sakrete Top 'N Bond (follow instructions on packaging). This can be used on horizontal and vertical repairs. For smaller cracks up to 1/2 inch wide, use Sakrete Concrete Crack Filler.

Here’s how to tackle potholes and cracks in asphalt driveways:

1. Chisel out loose blacktop, ensuring that the sides are vertical. Be sure to remove all loose particles, dirt or grass. If sub-base is loose, remove the unsound portion and replace with clean compacted gravel or stone.

2. Pour a two-inch layer of Sakrete All Weather Blacktop Patch in the area to be repaired. Then, compact with a tamper or 4x4 post until material reaches a one inch thickness. Place and compact additional layers until the desired thickness is achieved.

Riding over the patch with a car will not provide sufficient compaction. Compaction must be sufficient to cause the stone in the blacktop to lock together and minimize voids in each layer. If the blacktop is not completely compacted, the patch will remain soft and the material may not stay in place.

For cracks up to 1/2 inch wide, use Sakrete Blacktop Crack Filler. Once the crack is filled in, complete the job by putting down the Sakrete Blacktop Sealer which comes ready to use, has a smooth texture, and once applied, gives your driveway a shiny jet black finish.

For more detailed directions on both concrete and asphalt repair, log on to www.sakrete.com/projects and click on the concrete and asphalt repair tab. Come spring when your neighbor’s driveway is cracking apart and yours is in one piece, you’ll be glad you did.

How to Save Energy and Money

The Environmental Protection Agency says if every American changed just one light bulb to an Energy Star qualified bulb, we'd save enough energy to light 7 million homes. So what's the difference between a traditional incandescent bulb and an energy saving compact florescent?

Compact florescent light bulbs use 75 percent less energy than most standard bulbs and last up to 10 times longer. While the price of an Energy Star CFL may initially be greater, the EPA says the energy savings from the bulb more than makes up the difference. Using just one compact florescent can save you $30 on your energy bill over the course of a year. It's not just homeowners cashing in on the savings - corporations have begun getting in the act, as well.

The Bank of America Tower in Miami recently began switching to more efficient bulbs. When the town of Amherst, NY, updated some 100 buildings with - among other improvements - energy efficient lighting, the result was about three-quarters of a million dollars in savings each year.

How to Safely Introduce Your Four-legged Friends to a New Diet

As the popularity of organic food grows and people realize the benefits of a diet rich in natural ingredients for their families, parents are now looking for safe and healthy foods for their four-legged “kids” too.

“Pets are considered family members by most people, so it’s understandable that they want them to have the same high quality foods as everyone else in the household,” says Shelley Gunton, “Top Dog” and CEO of Castor & Pollux Pet Works, maker of natural and organic pet food and treats.

Diane Noble, mom to golden retriever Bailey and a short-haired cat named Kid, is one of these people. After the pet food recall last spring, she decided to start feeding Bailey a new brand of organic food, but didn’t realize that new food should be gradually introduced in order for her dog’s digestive system to acclimate.

“Poor Bailey’s tummy was so upset ... she was running from the room because of the smells she was making,” remembers Noble. “I thought the food just wasn’t right for her. It never crossed my mind that I needed to take steps to switch her food slowly and safely.”

After learning how to do it right, Noble successfully switched Kid to the new organic food too. “During the change-over process, Kid would pick the organic pieces out from the others and eat them first because they were his favorite!” said Noble.

How to Switch

Dr. Edward Moser, veterinarian and animal nutritionist and advisor for several of the nation’s top pet food companies, has answers to some commonly asked questions about how to safely switch a pet’s food:

Q: I’ve tried to switch my dog/cat’s food before and it really messed up their digestive system. Why is switching food so disruptive?

A: Some dogs/cats have stomachs that are sensitive to a dietary change. It can be for a multitude of reasons relating to the food, the animal’s health, or sometimes to their eating behavior.

Commonly, digestive upset associated with the introduction of a new food is the result of the new food’s novelty -- dogs and cats will wolf down the new food, overwhelming the digestive system. Or, it may simply be that the new food has a stronger flavoring system they aren’t used to.

Q: What’s the best way to switch my dog/cat to organic food?

A: The most cautious way of switching a dog or cat to any new food is to introduce the new food over the course of four to seven days by mixing in small amounts of the new while decreasing their current food. Each day add more of the new and remove an offsetting amount of the current food. Watch your dog/cat closely during the change. If some digestive disturbances occur, then take the changeover a bit more gradually, extending it over a few additional days.

Q: What will happen if I switch my dog/cat’s food too quickly?

A: If no problems occur then all is okay. Some dogs and cats switch quite easily.

If, however, your dog or cat is sensitive to a change in diet or dietary habit, then it is most common that feed refusals, vomiting, or diarrhea will be observed.

Q: My dog/cat’s food seems fine. She eats it when I give it to her. Why should I consider switching?

A: Switch diets if you feel the food is not meeting your pet’s nutritional, functional, or performance needs. You should also switch if there is concern regarding the origin of the food, its safety, freshness or consistency.

Q. I’ve heard that organic foods are “safer.” Are they really worth the extra money?

A: Organic certification is a “seal of approval” or “quality control check” for the ingredients and food preparation facilities used in the production of the pet food. This extra degree of scrutiny provides more confidence that no synthetic ingredients, preservatives, pesticides, herbicides, and other unsafe compounds have been added to the food.

The Safety of Certified Organics

“More people are looking at what’s in their pet’s food these days and finding that organics provide some peace of mind,” says Gunton of the rationale behind Castor & Pollux Pet Work’s newest creation, the Go Organic Kit, featuring Organix certified organic dry and canned foods and treats. “Because only ‘certified organic’ pet food and treats have gone through a regulatory certification process to ensure the utmost safety and quality, the Go Organic Kit will help pet parents be confident in what they’re feeding their dogs and cats.”

Housed in a reusable container, the Go Organic Kit contains everything needed to switch to an organic diet -- including both wet and dry food, as well as treats -- making the process easy and affordable. The kit is available at PETCO stores nationwide or online at www.castorpolluxpet.com.

How to Get Geese to Go the Natural Way

Goose poop is no laughing matter. With each bird capable of producing a pound or more of feces per day, it doesn’t take long for a fair-sized flock to render a location unwalkable by humans. Not only do the droppings make for an unpleasant environment, they pose a slip and fall hazard, and are a breeding ground for bacteria and disease.

Goose removal has become a multi-million-dollar industry, and it’s not just golf courses, industrial parks and airports who patronize it. Homeowners are fighting the flocks as well, striving to preserve their enjoyment of their homes and the value of their investment.

Still, says Mona Zemsky, a technician with Bird-X, a company that has helped convince millions of Canada Geese to move along during its 44 years in business, “No one bears the birds any ill will.”

“The geese are just doing what comes naturally, and looking for a safe, secure home,” says Zemsky. “No one wants to see them harmed for that. People just want the birds to move somewhere that they won’t cause a problem for humans.”

If you’re fighting the goose . . . er “good” fight, keep in mind the following goose-busting facts, courtesy of the experts at Bird-X:

* Experts estimate that at any given time there are 3.5 million to 5.5 million non-migrating Canada Geese living in the United States. Another 9 million to 11 million migrate in every spring and fall.

* Canada Geese range throughout North America, but are particularly troublesome in the northeast and upper Midwest.

* Geese are looking for water, food, lush greens and a safe, easy place to raise their families. The most successful removal techniques involve convincing the geese that a location no longer is safe and comfortable for them.

* Geese have excellent memories and will return to the same spot year after year unless they are convinced to go elsewhere.

* Demand is high for relocation techniques that do not harm the birds or the environment. In fact, in many areas of the country, it is illegal to harm Canada Geese or their eggs in the removal process. Some municipalities place restrictions on the use of chemicals in goose removal. “In fact, lethal or harmful methods are actually counter-productive,” Zemsky says. “Nature abhors a vacuum and if you don’t alter the location’s desirability to geese, new geese will flock to fill the void. Furthermore, harming geese probably won’t improve relations with the neighbors.”

* Successful removal techniques prey upon geese’s instinctive fears. This is why products like Bird-X’s Goose Buster, which drives birds away using recordings of actual goose distress calls, or the Gator Guard, which makes the birds think a predator is present, work well. In fact, geese instinctively respond to the Gator Guard, a life-size, lifelike replica of an alligator head, even in regions where alligators do not live – and where geese may never have seen a live one.

“The best approach is one that motivates birds on three levels – sound, sight and taste,” says Zemsky. “The Goose Buster makes noise that frightens the birds away. The Gator Guard gives a visual cue that an area is ‘unsafe.’ And Goose Chase, a biodegradable food-grade agent made from the bitter-tasting, smelly part of concord grapes, makes food sources such as grass and ponds unpalatable to the birds.”

How to Mouse-proof Naturally With Peppermint

As the weather turns cooler, mice begin to seek cozier surroundings -- and the perfect place to settle is your home. Even seemingly well-sealed houses are susceptible, as mice are excellent swimmers and climbers, are able to jump over a foot off the floor and can squeeze through openings as small as 1/4 of an inch. That's about the diameter of a pencil!

Fortunately, natural peppermint essential oil (also called "oil of peppermint") offers a safe, effective and humane way to discourage these damaging and potentially disease-carrying rodents from entering your home.

It's important to first make your house as hard as possible for the mice to get into, of course. Don't leave doors ajar. Inspect the outside of your home and use steel wool and caulking to seal up gaps like those around outside faucets and basement windows, where television and phone lines enter the house, and small cracks in a brick or stone foundation. Other preventive measures include blocking exhaust vents with hardware cloth and eliminating breeding areas like piles of leaves or old newspapers and food sources like dirty pet food dishes.

Once you've fortified the house, discourage mice from entering with the scent of peppermint essential oil. Although the scent is pleasing to humans, it repels mice. Simply put a few drops of peppermint essential oil on cotton balls and place them around the house, sprinkle the oil directly on items, or make a scented spray with two teaspoons of peppermint essential oil per cup of water.

The peppermint will remain an effective repellent for as long as the scent lingers. This varies according to conditions, of course, but you should get good results in most cases if you replenish the oil every two or three weeks.

Try to strongly scent areas where you think the mice might enter or hide -- like in basements and under stairs -- and likely avenues of travel. Mice prefer to run along walls, so it's most effective to add scent along the outside of the room.

The peppermint oil helps keep mice away without the danger of poisoning pets and eliminates the need to handle repulsive traps or glue boards. As a bonus, the scent creates a very pleasant atmosphere for human inhabitants.

Half-ounce and two-ounce bottles of 100 percent pure peppermint essential oil are available from Aura Cacia in stores and at www.auracacia.com. Visit their website at www.auracacia.com for more information on peppermint and other essential oils.

How to Protect Your Children from Dangerous Infections

It’s been five decades in the making and it’s spreading faster than experts thought. With sports stars, celebrities and school children alike becoming infected, MRSA (methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus), which was nearly unheard of two year ago, is becoming a common term.

Today the superbug that was created by 50 years of over-prescribing antibiotics is showing up in every community. So far, the hardest hit are children that are active and play sports.

Whether an injury from playing freshman football or a scrape from playing hopscotch, MRSA can enter the system through skin wounds in children of any age. Causing additional concern is the fact that traditional triple-antibiotic ointments, that fill store shelves and have been used on children for years to prevent infection, don’t kill this aggressive and highly antibiotic-resistant strain of staph bacteria. StaphAseptic, a widely available over-the-counter ointment, is the only product of its kind that’s been proven to prevent infections from this type of bacteria.

A recent study by the Association for Professionals in Infection Control and Epidemiology (APIC) showed that MRSA is significantly more widespread and established than previously thought. The study also found that as many as 119,000 patients each year may die from MRSA. A previous study by the Centers for Disease Control said that approximately 60 percent of infections seen in hospital emergency rooms are MRSA related.

“It should be automatic that parents take immediate preventive actions because of the problems we are seeing with MRSA,” says Dr. Mark Christensen, a Utah pharmacist. “We have great fears that community acquired MRSA staph infections will increase dramatically--because of what we’ve seen in the hospitals. Prevention is certainly the key to protecting children from a MRSA infection.”

Five Steps for Prevention

1) Wash hands thoroughly. Make sure to have children wash hands for at least 15 seconds with soap and warm water. Fifteen seconds is about how long it takes to recite the alphabet.

2) Treat and cover wounds. Cuts, scrapes and burns are the most common ways that MRSA enters the body to start an infection. StaphAseptic, from Tec Laboratories, is a widely available over-the-counter wound-care treatment that is applied to minor wounds before a bandage is applied. StaphAseptic gets to the root of the problem by killing MRSA before the infection starts.

3) Don’t share personal items. Children should not share items like combs, bar soap or tweezers. With summer upon us and a lot of kids heading to swimming pools, they should be reminded not to share towels.

4) Shower after physical activity. MRSA thrives on moist, warm skin. The human body, after strenuous activity, is a breeding ground for the spread of MRSA and other bacteria. Try using a shower gel instead of bar soap, which can carry the bacteria.

5) Seek medical attention for active wounds. If an infection sets in it is vital to get to a doctor immediately. MRSA can spread within hours and eventually cause pneumonia and even death. MRSA-related infections can resemble a pimple or boil and can spread quickly over the body.

MRSA information is available at www.mrsaHelp.com. A complimentary pamphlet on MRSA prevention is available by calling (800) 482-4464 and pressing “0.”

How to Win Friends and Influence People

This grandfather of all people-skills books was first published in 1937. It was an overnight hit, eventually selling 15 million copies. How to Win Friends and Influence People is just as useful today as it was when it was first published, because Dale Carnegie had an understanding of human nature that will never be outdated. Financial success, Carnegie believed, is due 15 percent to professional knowledge and 85 percent to "the ability to express ideas, to assume leadership, and to arouse enthusiasm among people." He teaches these skills through underlying principles of dealing with people so that they feel important and appreciated. He also emphasizes fundamental techniques for handling people without making them feel manipulated. Carnegie says you can make someone want to do what you want them to by seeing the situation from the other person's point of view and "arousing in the other person an eager want." You learn how to make people like you, win people over to your way of thinking, and change people without causing offense or arousing resentment. For instance, "let the other person feel that the idea is his or hers," and "talk about your own mistakes before criticizing the other person." Carnegie illustrates his points with anecdotes of historical figures, leaders of the business world, and everyday folks.
